Who Shouldn't Do EMDR?

EMDR may not be suitable for people who are emotionally unstable, actively using substances, or unable to stay grounded during distress. Some individuals need stabilisation work before beginning trauma processing. A therapist will assess readiness and may recommend building emotional regulation skills or alternative support before starting EMDR. Safety is the foundation of effective trauma therapy, so no one should begin EMDR before they feel prepared. With the right preparation, many people who were initially not ready can safely and successfully engage in EMDR later.
